New York, Oct. 18, 2007 (HealthDay News) -- Pfizer Inc., the world's largest drug company, announced today that it has entered into a definitive agreement to acquire a majority stake in the global drug giant's Celebrex, for $1 billion, as well as a minority stake in the company's Arcoxia, for $1 billion.
The transaction was announced in the fourth quarter of 2007 and will close at the end of 2008.
"Celebrex and Arcoxia are significant companies in the treatment of chronic pain, arthritis and other degenerative diseases," said David M. Cohen, M. D., president and chief executive officer, Pfizer.
Celebrex is the world's second-biggest drug, behind Pfizer's Lipitor, the world's top-selling drug, and the world's second-biggest painkiller, behind Pfizer's Prozac, the world's top-selling painkiller.
